Improved pangea anonymous ftp service makes it easy to distribute and receive files.
June 7, 2007
"Anonymous ftp" is a method for allowing anyone on the Internet to access files in a special directory on pangea's disks. It can be used to distribute files to colleagues or collect files from them. This service has been recently improved so it can be used without any special setup. It is now the recommended way to distribute large files to outside colleagues since the School's new network firewall prevents you from running an ftp server on your own computer. Email attachments are only good for sending small files.
To prevent abuse by hackers, only people with valid pangea accounts can load files to be distributed, although anyone with Internet access can see and copy them. Similarly, although anyone on the Internet can drop off a file, only people with pangea accounts will be able to access that file on pangea's disks or copy it to their own computers.
