Active Gigabit Network Jacks in Earth Sciences

Last revision January 27, 2014

Computers, printers, and other devices plug into wired network jacks at "Telecommunications Service Outlets" (TSOs) in the walls.

During June and July, 2011, the computer network in Braun Hall (Geology Corner), Mitchell Earth Sciences (except Branner Library), and Green Earth Sciences was upgraded from 100 megabit/second connections to gigabit (1,000 megabit/second) connections. This page shows which jacks are currently active for network service in those three buildings.

The Yang and Yamazaki Environment and Energy building (Y2E2) has always had gigabit network service, managed by the School of Engineering. The School of Engineering does not maintain any public listing of active network jacks in Y2E2. You simply have to try jacks to see if they are active. The two leftmost blue jacks on the top row are generally reserved for VoIP phones only (Y2E2 does not have converged communications that allow VoIP and data on the same jacks). Try the other jacks for computer connections. Earth Sciences people in Y2E2 can contact our earth sciences network administrator for help finding active network jacks or getting additional ones activated.

The previous Earth Sciences policy with 100 m/s switches in Geology Corner, Mitchell, and Green buildings was to activate nearly every network jack. With the new more expensive gigabit switches, provided by ITS as part of its converged communications upgrade for Earth Sciences, we will activate jacks only as needed to support actual connected devices.

This page lists the specific network jacks that have been activated for gigabit service in the Earth Sciences buildings (Mitchell, Green, and Geology Corner), sorted by room number and TSO number. Other jacks are inactive. The network administrator has applied small green dots next to the upper outside corners of these jacks that have active gigabit service.

Network jacks in the Earth Sciences buildings are colored orange. Starting in January 2014, newly installed network jacks will be colored green. White jacks are old analog phone jacks and never used for networking.

The number of possible network jacks in a TSO varies from two to eight. In the table, jacks are named with letters in this order in Geology Corner and Green Earth Sciences buildings: U, X, Y, Z, M, N, O, P. In Mitchell Earth Sciences, the names are: U1, X1, U2, X2, U3, X3, U4, X4. In either case, they are named left to right and top to bottom, starting from the top leftmost jack, as shown in these diagrams.

You can also click on one of the links below to see a map showing the TSO numbers and locations in the rooms to cross-correlate with the table below (map will open in a new window).

Please contact the School's network administrator if you think that more or different jacks should be activated in your rooms.
