My recent research integrates modern and ancient systems to understand the development of deep-water sedimentary systems from the basin to grain scale. My work has ranged from using novel methods of detrital geochronology, petrology, and geochemistry for gaining insights into the tectonic configuration intercontinental Neoproterozoic ocean basins, to establishing frontier detailed stratigraphic frameworks for large unconfined deep-water turbidite basins, to characterizing the architecture of centimeter-scale deposits from ponded sediment gravity flows in tectonically-active accretionary systems. Currently, I am working with recent sediment cores within the Monterey submarine canyon of offshore California to link deep-water depositional events to modern geologic processes recorded on human timescales.
