Professional Societies

American Geophysical Union is a society that brings together a broad range of topics in the earth sciences. Near-surface geophysics is a new focus group at AGU. You can now join this focus group as your primary affiliation when you join AGU. Joining this society is one of the best "deals" for students: for $7 annual membership you get EOS, the society newspaper with articles on research, conferences, employment opportunities, and more. Plus once a month you receive Physics Today published by the American Physical Society (my favorite reading!).
Go to their website www.agu.org and select Member Services

Society of Exploration Geophysicists is far more than a society of "exploration geophysicists". SEG is the society that focuses on applied geophysics - using geophysics to obtain images of the earth to solve problems. In the past the society focused nearly exclusively on applications in the oil and gas industry but now has a growing interest in near-surface and environmental geophysics. For a student membership of $17.50 you can join SEG and receive The Leading Edge each month. There is also an option to have your membership paid by a corporate sponsor – just follow the links. Go to: www.seg.org and select Join SEG For the Near-surface geophysics section of SEG then select "join NSG" or go directly to their website at nsgs.seg.org

Environmental and Engineering Geophysics is a society that is entirely focused on - as its name says – environmental and engineering geophysics. This society excels at bringing together the geophysicists and the engineers; and has an annual meeting SAGEEP that is always popular with students – small, and very friendly – and free! for student members. Go to www.eegs.org and follow the links for information about membership and SAGEEP.

European Society of Geoscientists & Engineers -- Near Surface Geoscience Division focuses on the application of geophysical techniques in the study of the earth's upper-most 200 m, primarily for environmental, engineering archaeological, and hydrogeological geological applications. In addition to organizing annual technical meetings, NSGD also publishes its own journal (Near Surface Geophysics), and contributes to EAGE's newsletter (First Break).
