Environmental Geophysics

The top 100 meters of the earth is very close to where people live. Some people get their drinking water from this part of the earth. The foundations of our buildings also rest on this part of the earth. Archaeological remains are found in this part of the earth. Sometimes our garbage is buried in this part of the earth. Many of us have heard about the film Erin Brockovich with Julia Robert which deals with chemical contamination in this part of the Earth.

Environmental Geophysics studies the properties of this part of the earth so as to assist in finding water, siting buildings, cleaning up contaminants.

Environmental Geophysics develops and uses methods for imaging the Earth, in the same way that doctors image the human body.
