Chris Fedor and Chris Hanson investigated the intersection of cultural, historical, political, economic, and environmental constraints facing the Norwegian whaling industry. They spent two months in Norway interviewing stakeholders in the local whaling industry. They sought answers to three primary questions: Is Norwegian whaling sustainable? Are environmentalists effectively focusing their resources with respect to Arctic marine environments? What factors have preserved commercial whaling in Norway, Iceland, and Japan? Their fieldwork in Oslo and the Lofoten Islands culminated in the production of a film entitled “Chasing Giants” that creates a rarely heard discourse among whalers, environmentalists, consumers, government officials, and historians. They were given the “Best Student Filmmaker Award” at the Blue Ocean Film Festival in the summer of 2010.
