Dean's Message (PIF)
From my perspective as dean, I can’t say enough about how helpful PIF funds are to our operation. Most of our endowment income, research funding, and gift support is highly restricted as to its use. Because PIF funding is unrestricted, I have the flexibility to target its use strategically so that its real value far exceeds its literal dollar value.
PIF funds are used to recruit new faculty and fund the start-up costs of new laboratories and research programs. They are used to purchase state-of-the-art technology and equipment, which open doors to discovery, and to pay the skilled technical staff we require to operate and maintain those systems. PIF funds provide essential support for our outstanding students, and fund curriculum development. And they have been used as seed funding to launch new academic programs and centers and to leverage other funding opportunities.
The exceptionally talented, accomplished, and committed cadre of alumni volunteers on the Petroleum Investments Committee has done an outstanding job of managing the PIF for the benefit of the School of Earth Sciences, and they are ideally suited to assume investment responsibility for a larger endowment. I am deeply grateful to them for their efforts, and they and I would welcome your interest and support.
