Tom graduated with his MS/MBA in April 2010. He is now a product manager for OPOWER, a software company that provides behavioral energy efficiency and customer engagement programs to energy utilities.
While at Stanford, Tom's coursework focused on energy systems, energy efficiency and water resources management. He spent much of his time outside class consulting for companies and investigating entrepreneurial opportunities to apply technology to achieve energy and water efficiency. While in school, he proposed and led a 10-day Service Learning Trip for fellow students through California and Nevada focused on water resource challenges in the West. He also had leadership positions in the Environmentally Sustainable Business Club and the Public Management Program Executive Committee.
While in school, Tom had product-focused internships with Lab126, Amazon's Kindle development group, and Recurve, a residential energy audit and retrofit firm. He also completed a market strategy consulting project for Google PowerMeter and a sustainability strategy project for Nemo, an outdoor gear manufacturer.
After graduation, Tom spent 4 months working as a strategic project manager for the new Project on Water in the West, a joint research effort between the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Bill Lane Center for the American West. He authored a strategic plan for the new research initiative and also co-authored a working paper on the use of metrics in water resource management in California.
