I have ample experience in Discrete Element Modeling, and mechanical constitutive modeling of granular media such as powders and sand. I have also worked with several convex optimization packages.

My overall goal is to improve our understanding of the effect of major evolutionary environmental transitions on the sizes of organisms. Using phylogenetic comparative methods, I analyze various animal groups that inhabit an array of different habitats (such as marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments) for significant differences in body size between group members that inhabit those different habitats. Such groups may include gastropods, mammals, reptiles, etc.

McClain investigates the distribution and coupled cycling of heavy metals (such as chromium) and nutrients (such as nitrogen) in groundwater and soils. These investigations explore how humans are changing elemental cycling on Earth by comparing pristine regions to areas influenced by agriculture, mining or development. Her research quantifies chemical transformations and physical flow of water, working toward a molecular-level understanding of field-scale environmental processes. McClain conducts field, laboratory and modeling studies using imaging, isotopic, x-ray, microbiological, statistical and data visualization techniques. She is currently researching groundwater quality in California’s Central Valley.

The main advantage of using the Temperature response, is it's characteristic of being an advection-diffusion problem, so the Temperature response carries more information than the Pressure response.

I am currently working on three projects in New Zealand: using 3D seismic data to document the evolution of submarine gullies on the Pliocene-Pleistocene continental slope; detailed outcrop analysis and petrography to investigate sedimentation of a volcaniclastic submarine fan system in Late Miocene time; and detrital zircon U-Pb dating in Miocene-Pliocene basin strata to constrain sediment sources and flow pathways across the North Island during development of the modern tectonic regime.

My research interests involve developing and using microfluidic platforms to visualize pore-scale flow phenomena relevant to reservoir engineering. Secondary and tertiary recovery can cause clay particles to detach from the rock matrix and block subsequent pore space, significantly reducing reservoir permeability. Currently, I am conducting experiments to visualize the impact of brine composition and salt concentration on the release of clay particles from the rock matrix.
