It takes energy to make energy, whether it's renewable or a fossil fuel. Net energy analysis gauges the sustainability of energy technologies over time.

Stanford researchers encourage the use of net energy analysis, which compares the amount of energy generated by relatively new technologies, such as these wind turbines at a Pennsylvania factory, with the energy required to manufacture and maintain them.
