Maddy Lisaius (BS '19)

December 3, 2018

Madeline is a senior and coterm in the Land Systems track from Seattle, WA. She has spent much of her time at Stanford working on questions of environmental justice and service. For four years she has worked alongside the Waorani Women’s Association (AMWAE) and other community partners in Ecuador on projects promoting justice and wellbeing in an environmental context. During the 2017 - 2018 academic year, Madeline took a gap year to lead a collaborative project documenting experiences of forest change in Waorani Territory. She has lead technical skill, language and science workshops in the United States and across South America and mentors high school students taking less traditional educational paths. She is committed to sustaining long term partnerships for community driven science and making scientific work accessible to everyone. In the long term, Madeline’s goal is to co-produce science that serves fringe communities in the tropics, land tenure and management in forested and agricultural areas, robust spatial statistics and remote sensing as a tool for rapid and inexpensive information collection, and the power dynamics of knowledge production. Outside of academics, Madeline dances on the Salseros de Stanford and helps teach class around the Bay. She enjoys leading outdoor trips, especially those for first time explorers.
