Installing Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run the "setup" utility in the folder containing the compressed files. This utility will launch InstallSHIELD® which will take you through the process of creating folders and uncompressing the files that comprise Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT. 2. Uninstalling Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To uninstall Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT, follow these steps: 1. Ensure that Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT is not running. 2. Close all folders. 3. Go to Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel, click Control Panel 4. Double click on "Add/Remove Programs" icon. 5. Select "Backup Exec" from the list of programs. 6. Click on the "Add/Remove" button to uninstall, confirm by clicking the "Yes" button. 7. If the system asks to remove any shared files, please answer "no", as these files are possibly needed by another application. Note: The uninstall feature only deletes files installed by Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT, not files created by the program such as the catalog file. 3. Multiple SCSI Device Setups ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are receiving an error indicating that the controller is not responding and you have more than one device on your SCSI chain, make sure the Enable Disconnect option in the Adaptec BIOS setup is set to Yes (On). If this option is off, the Windows miniport driver causes a SCSI bus reset when your hard drive or CD-ROM is idle for more than 10 seconds. The reset causes the backup device's current operation to abort. To set the Enable Disconnect option: 1. Enter your SCSI controller's BIOS. For example, press and hold the CRTL-A keys (for Adaptec controllers) during the computer's boot sequence. 2. Switch ENABLE DISCONNECTION to YES (ON). Sometimes this option displays as Disconnect/Reconnect. Refer to your hardware manual for more information on this option. 4. Travan Drive Detection ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Travan drives are detected and appear in the program as the drive type they are based on. For example, a Tr-3 is presented as a QIC-3020, a Tr-2 is presented as a QIC-3010, and a Tr-1 is presented as a QIC-80. 5. Backing Up with the Windows 32-bit NetWare Client ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are backing up using the default Windows 32-bit NetWare client, the shareable attribute on NetWare 3.11-3.12 servers will be set to OFF. Using the Windows 32-bit NetWare client, this attribute is set correctly. 6. Mouse Drivers Interfering with Right-click Functionality ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some mouse drivers, for example MS Intellipoint drivers, interfere with right-click functionality. If a context menu does not appear when you right-click a file, try holding the Shift key and pressing F10 or, try double-right clicking on a file to bring up the context menu. If the context menu still does not appear, you may want to uninstall the mouse software. 7. Registry Item Appears in Device View Selection Tree ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are restoring a SCSI set that contains a backup of the Registry from a previous version of your backup software, the registry item appears in the selection panes. Check the registry item to restore the Registry. CAUTION: Restoring the Registry may cause serious problems if your hardware configuration has changed since you last backed up the Registry. 8. Error Occurring with a PPT Device ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are using a PPT device and you receive an error indicating a corrupt file set directory, try changing the port delay settings for your PPT device. To change the port delay settings: 1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties. 2. Click the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window. 3. Select your PPT device, then click Properties. 4. Click the Settings tab, change the Port delay entry in increments of 10 with a maximum setting of 30. After each change in setting, close and then reopen your backup software to see if the problem has been resolved. For example, change the Port delay to 10, then click OK. Next, close and then reopen your backup software to see if the problem is resolved. If the problem persists, try changing the Port delay to 20. 9. Power Management Conflicts ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Computer systems having power management features may conflict with the backup program. If the computer system activates its power saving mode during a backup or any other tape operation, you may experience any of the following symptoms: 1. The video screen may turn black and you won't be able to return the system to normal operation. 2. The tape drive may continually run or "shoeshine". 3. The keyboard may be active, but the monitor will not. If you experience any of these problems, reboot the system, turn all power management features OFF (use AC power with laptops), and start the tape operation again. 10. SCSI Controller ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you experience sluggish performance with your SCSI controller, contact the hardware manufacturer for the latest mini-port driver. Please make sure you have the most recent versions of these drivers installed. 11. Delay After Media Format, Media Initialize, or Canceled Backup ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A delay of a few seconds to several minutes may result after canceling a format or initialize operation. Delays may also occur after you cancel a backup job. Hard disk activity will occur while information is removed from the catalog. Longer delays occur if the medium contains a large number of files. 12. Reading QIC-80 Backup Sets ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT is unable to read data that spans from a QIC-80 WIDE tape to a normal width QIC-80 tape if the data was originally written using Version 1.0. This is not a problem if the tapes were written with Version 1.1 or later. 13. Tape Capacity ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Remaining tape capacity is not indicated for all tape drives. This function is hardware dependent. 14. Known Incompatibilities ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The following incompatibilities exist between Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT and other programs: 1. Installing Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT onto a disk drive that has been compressed with Stacker95 may cause the system to lock up. The program should not be installed on hard drives using this compression. 15. Archive Bit ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The archive bit on a file is reset immediately after it is backed up. If the user cancels a backup operation in mid-progress, the archive bits for some files will be reset even though they are not backed up. If a backup is canceled, it is recommended that a full backup be performed immediately to guarantee that all files are safely stored. 16. Possible Delays with Device View ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Using "Device View" on a high capacity cartridge may take up to 30 minutes. 17. Possible Problems with IDE Chipsets ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On some PC's, the Windows operating system software is unable to properly recognize and configure the IDE chipset, which controls the IDE hard disk, CD-ROM, and IDE tape drive. Windows will force all accesses to IDE devices to occur sequentially, sometimes referred to as serialized access. Serialized access implies each IDE operation must complete before the next access can begin. Normally the delays caused by sequential operation are not apparent to the customer because hard drive and CD-ROM accesses complete quickly. However, when using an IDE tape backup device, certain tape operations, such as retension, will require longer periods of time to complete and will cause a noticeable delay in accessing other IDE devices while the tape operation completes. The backup software appears to be hung, but it's not. The system is just waiting for the IDE tape operation to complete. One way to reduce the delays when using an IDE tape backup device is to use a third party IDE controller card. An Acculogic IDE controller card is available for purchase from Seagate Express at 1-800-531-0968. 18. Restoring Registry and Bindery Files ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95/98/NT cannot restore NetWare Bindery or Registry Files from backup sets created by Seagate Backup for Windows Version 5.x. All other files in a Version 5.x backup set will restore correctly. 19. Backing Up the Windows 95 Registry ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Backup Registry option may cause some systems to lock up. This may be caused by a non-standard key in the Registry. To manually backup the Registry: 1. Deselect the Registry option in your backup job definition. 2. Select the following files in the Windows directory: USER.DAT, SYSTEM.DAT, USER.DA0 and SYSTEM.DA0. 3. Run the backup. Once these four files are restored, they can be used to rebuild the Registry. Refer to the Windows 95 Registry Editor Help for additional information. 20. Tape Is Formatted, But Not Readable Error Message ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For optimal performance during backup and restore, close down all other applications running in the background (TSR's). This includes virus checkers, screen savers, and shell programs. Errors associated with background applications include tape not readable, general page faults, and slow performance. 21. Determining the Status of Scheduled Backups ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To view the status of your scheduled backups, choose Report under the Tools menu. Job Report will indicate that the operation was completed or will display any errors that may have occurred during backup or verify. If the media in your drive is full, or is not formatted with the backup software format, scheduled backups will not complete successfully unless you select "always overwrite" in the Job Options. Because "Always Overwrite" automatically replaces all data on the current media during a scheduled backup, you may wish to choose the default option "Always Append" and initialize your media before using it in a scheduled backup. 22. Backing up to Compressed Media ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Removable media compressed by DriveSpace cannot be used for spanned backups. The following message will appear: "An error occurred while writing the backup data. The end of the media was approached unexpectedly." In addition, if you are backing up to a file with a removable media formatted with NTFS, the eject button will be non-operable. This is an NTFS specific problem that does not allow the OS (operating system) to release the device. 23. CD-R Overwrite ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CD-R media (compact disc recordables) do not support the overwrite option. 24. Scheduler Conflicts ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For Windows 95--Microsoft System Agent (SAGE) Scheduler and the Backup Exec Scheduler will not run simultaneously. If SAGE is running on your machine when installing Backup Exec, SAGE will be used as the default scheduler. If SAGE is not running on your machine when installing, you have the option of using either the SAGE Scheduler or the Backup Exec Scheduler. Microsoft Task Scheduler is not compatible with Backup Exec. Scheduled backups must be performed using the Backup Exec Scheduler. 25. Registry Restore Defaults ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The default setting during a Restore is "unattended," and will automatically restore Registry settings for SOFTWARE only. To restore the software and hardware portion of the registry, the "Unattended Restore" option must be de-selected. 26. Restoring Novell Bindery ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For Windows NT--To restore Trustee info when restoring the Novell bindery, you must first run BINDFIX. 27. Winfax8 Incompatibility ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Winfax8 and Backup Exec will not operate simultaneously if a message is received in Winfax while Backup Exec is running. The modem will not always respond to incoming calls or commands. 28. Emergency Recovery on FAT32 or DBCS systems ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are running an Emergency Recovery on FAT32 (OSR2 and Win98) or DBCS systems, you significantly reduce the recovery time, by adding the line "SMARTDRV 4096" on the autoexec.bat and rebooting your system. 29. Disaster Recovery ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Backup Exec can protect the data on your NT Workstation in the event of a hard drive failure. The Disaster Recovery process allows you to recover lost data and return your system to full operation. You may choose to back up the NT Workstation Registry by selecting it in the Options settings under the Advanced tab. By default, Backup Exec will back up the registry when the Windows Directory is selected for backup. The NT Workstation Registry must be backed up in order to properly restore your system in the event of a hard drive failure. To use Disaster Recovery: 1. Replace all damaged hardware and properly format the destination drive (see your Windows NT manual for assistance). 2. Start your computer with the Windows NT system disk in your floppy drive (or in your CD-ROM drive if you have a bootable CD-ROM drive). 3. Follow all instructions to perform a minimal re-install of Windows NT Workstation, including any Service Packs, and reboot your machine when prompted. Configurations will be restored later. 4. Install Backup Exec. 5. When installation is complete, click the Start menu, select Programs, then select Backup Exec. The startup dialog screen appears. Click Close. 6. From the Restore tab, select a device in the Restore from device drop-down list box. 7. Insert the volume containing the last full backup of your system. 8. Select Device View, then select the last full backup on the volume. 9. From the Restore tab, click Options, General tab and select the Always replace the file on my computer checkbox. 10. Click the Advanced tab and select the Restore Windows Registry checkbox, then click Start. 11. Reboot your machine. NOTE: Files that were reported as "busy" should be restored at this time. If you wish to restore these files, follow the instructions below for restoring busy files. To restore busy files; 1. Click the Start menu, select Programs, then select Backup Exec. The Startup dialog screen appears. Click Close. 2. From the Restore tab, select a device in the Restore from device drop- down list box. 3. Insert the volume containing the last full backup of your system. 4. Select Device View, then select the last full backup on the volume. 5. From the Restore tab, check the files that were reported busy. 6. Click Options, General tab and select the Always replace the file on my computer checkbox. 7. Click the Advanced tab and de-select the Restore Windows Registry checkbox, then click Start. 8. Reboot your machine. If you have any differential or incremental backups performed after the last full backup, restore those as required. When you have restored all the files from your backup volumes, reboot the machine to complete your recovery. 30. Restores Requiring Multiple Media ------------------------------------------------------------------------ After selecting files to restore and clicking Start, the Media Required box will appear, but may not display all the media required to complete a restore for a multiple media backup job. For backup jobs requiring more than one medium, it is recommended that you know the sequence in which the media were filled. To ensure a complete restore, insert the media in sequence until all of the requested files have been restored. 31. Backing up files with "X" attribute ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If performing a Netware backup, files with the "X" attribute will not be backed up. The report file will display that a file with an "X" attribute is not found. On verify after backup, the report file will indicate that the file is not found. 32. Scheduler Log File ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Scheduler log file records the status of a scheduled backup job. If it reports exceptions to a successful job completion, such as warnings (2), skipped files (3), or errors (101), the details can be found in the Backup Exec log file.
