The intersection of basin modeling and real-world geologic processes

Basin and petroleum system modeling is a numerical technique for reconstructing the evolution of rocks and fluids in sedimentary basins through geologic time.  As such, it is typically pigeon-holed as a tool that is beneficial only to the oil and gas community.  However, because the core of basin modeling is solving partial differential equations that describe conservation of mass, fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reactions, among others, it can be utilized more broadly in the geosciences.  This talk presents several examples of geologic processes that can be more completely examined with basin modeling.  These include erosion magnitude and timing, salt diapirism, chemical diagenesis, groundwater flow, and many more.

Allegra Hosford Scheirer is a Research Scientist at Stanford University, where she is a Principal Scientist in the Basin and Petroleum System Modeling Industrial Affiliates Program, teaches graduate level courses, and advises graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Prior to Stanford, Allegra was a member of the Geophysical Unit of Menlo Park and the Energy Resource Program at the U.S. Geological Survey. She is the editor of USGS Professional Paper 1713 and a past Associate Editor of Journal of Geophysical Research. Allegra’s degrees are from the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography (Ph.D.) and Brown University (Geology-Physics/Math).
