Geophysics Department Seminar: Uwe Albertin

Title: A timeline of selected developments in seismic depth imaging

Abstract: Seismic imaging has a long history, beginning with the first seismic source patent filed by Reginald Fessenden in 1917, to the present day, where 3D waveform inversion is now becoming more commonplace. In this presentation, I’ll take a look back at some of the highlights of seismic imaging development, with particular emphasis on the imaging algorithm developments that have driven the industry, and have led to images that have played a key role in many of the major oil discoveries over the past twenty-five years. I’ll also give an overview of some of the more recent technical developments in seismic imaging and inversion, with the hope of giving an indication where seismic imaging may be heading in the future.
