These stories offer a glimpse of the many ways in which faculty and students are addressing some of today's greatest challenges in the Earth and environmental sciences.
The Fellowships are designed to attract the most talented students to study at Stanford, as well as to honor and support our most outstanding current doctoral students. The Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowship (SIGF) Program is a new university-wide program to award three-year fellowships to outstanding doctoral students engaged in interdisciplinary research. It is a competitive university-wide program overseen and administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE).
The program recognizes and rewards outstanding teaching by teaching assistants in the Schools of Humanities and Sciences, Earth Sciences and Engineering. EWART THOMAS, professor of psychology, started the program in 1989, during his years as H&S dean, in order to acknowledge and celebrate the important role that TAs play in teaching at Stanford. Each year half of the departments in H&S are invited to choose usually one to three (depending on the department or program’s size) of their graduate student teachers to be honored by the designation Centennial TA.
ERE Student Ekin Ozdogan has won the 2nd place award in the student poster competition at the 22nd Annual Meeting of North American Membrane Society (NAMS) held in New Orleans, LA. Her winning poster "Nitrogen-Selective Membranes for Carbon Capture Applications" was chosen from 50 entries in the Gas Separations division. NAMS awards program is designed to encourage and support outstanding individuals that have made significant contributions to the advancement of membrane technology.
Awards are given out each year to ERE Students in three categories. The Henry J. Ramey, Jr. Fellowship Award recognizes the most prominent research student in the department. Frank G. Miller Fellowship Award recognizes the top student each quarter in course performance. It is awarded three times each year to a student selected on grade performance and research productivity from the preceding quarter. The William H. Brigham Memorial Award recognizes a student, or a staff member, who contributes their time generously to improve the lives of others. It is an award for department citizenship. 2012 Recipients
Energy Resources Engineering Assistant Professor Jennifer Wilcox approaches the energy science sub-field carbon capture with an interdisciplinary discussion based upon fundamental chemical concepts ranging from thermodynamics, combustion, kinetics, mass transfer, material properties, and the relationship between the chemistry and process of carbon capture technologies.
The President of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists announced the selection of Mark McClure and Roland Horne to receive SEG’s Best Paper in GEOPHYSICS Award, for the technical paper entitled Investigation of injection-induced seismicity using a coupled fluid flow and rate/state friction model, published in Volume 76, No. 6, November-December 2011.
Official recognition of the award will take place during SEG’s 2012 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, November 4-9.
Mark McClure's research was funded by a seed grant from the Precourt Institute for Energy.
Michael Krause takes first place in Ph.D. division and Mohammad Shahvali, takes second place at the 2012 SPE Western Regional Student Paper Contest in Bakersfield. Additional winners for ERE include Salem Aldousary, first place and Kurt Wilson, third place in the combined Master's / Undergraduate Division.

Although the United States is one of the world's biggest energy consumers, the average American has little knowledge about basic energy issues, says Margot Gerritsen.
Stanford University petroleum engineer Tony Kovscek, an expert in heavy oil recovery and an unpaid advisor to GlassPoint, says he is excited by how easy it is to integrate GlassPoint's system with oil fields burning natural gas. "There's a pretty significant carbon footprint associated with these more viscous oils, and GlassPoint has created the potential to reduce that carbon footprint fairly significantly," says Kovscek.
