Research

I am a statistician working on problems associated with environmental monitoring, design of environmental sampling strategies, detection of trends in environmental quality, and assessment of human exposure to environmental pollutants. I try to separate the predictable from the unpredictable and thereby to assess the uncertainty in our knowledge of the environment. To accomplish this goal I need to understand how environmental indicators vary both geographically and over time and how their uncertain components may be described and computersimulated. My principal research tools are drawn from probability theory, process models of the environment, and the theory of statistical estimation. I use data from surface based monitoring stations as well as data obtained from satellites.

Teaching

I teach courses for graduate and undergraduate students in the EESS Department, the Statistics Department. and the undergraduate Earth Systems Program. I also teach freshman and sophomore seminars from time to time. My introductory statistics courses emphasize environmental applications and my graduate level courses include offerings in spatial statistics and the literature of statistics.

Professional Activities

I am currently on the editorial boards of the Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment and Atmosphere Environment. I am past editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association and Statistical Science. I am a recipient of the Griffths Teaching Award of the International Association for Mathematical Geology (2006), the 20th Century Distinguished Service Award for Environmental Statistics (2000), and the Distinguished Achievement Medal of the American Statistical Association Section on the Environment (1993). I have been an elected member of the council of the International Statistical Institute (2001-04) and am an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute for Mathematical Statistics, and the Royal Statistical Society.
