EESS Winter Seminar Series - Jennifer Harden, Project Chief, Soil Scientist, U.S. Geological Survey, "Permafrost Carbon in Northern Latitudes: What's Down with the Underground?"  Abstract:  Enormous stocks of organic matter reside in arctic soils that are currently frozen. Over the next 100 years,  we estimate that over 400 Pg C and 29 Pg N will be subjected to thaw. As a result, what was frozen for thousands of years will enter our ecosystems and atmosphere as a new contributor to local, regional, and global systems. Field- and modeling-based assessments help constrain the rates at which C and N can be transferred among terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric systems.
