- DHCP or bootp

- DNS

Network Browsing

- Windows "Network Neighborhood" - shows user-defined "workgroups" and server defined "domains", only on local Earth Sciences network.

- Macintosh classic "Chooser" - organized by zones. Shows all zones on campus now. As of Sept. 2003, campus-wide access will be removed and will only show zones & devices in local Earth Sciences network.

- MacOS 9 "Network Browser" or MacOS X "Local Network" - TCP/IP based browsing - on Stanford, shows entire campus as one big list and takes long time to run!

Authentication

- kerberos

- NIS

- Netinfo (MacOS X)

- need for encrypted passwords

NAT

Never use on stanford network! MacOS X 10.2 users especially beware. Listed as "Internet Sharing" in Network Preference Pane. Misleading terminology might lead you to "try it". Don't - will start hijacking connections of all devices on the local network!
