Upgraded G.R.I.D. lab computers ready to use

Last revision September 4, 2008

Computers in the School's G.R.I.D. lab in Mitchell A59 have been upgraded and are ready to use.

Four new Apple iMac computers - Beck, Jode, Mauro, and Mercator - are all dual-boot. They run both Mac OS X and Windows XP. Hold down the OPTION key while starting to select the desired operating system. The existing Apple G5, Saxton, runs Mac OS X only. The new Dell Optiplex 755, Amerigo, runs Windows XP only.

Whichever computer you use, your My Documents (Windows) and Documents (Mac OS X) folders will now be automatically stored in your home share on the School file server, sesfs.stanford.edu, inside a new GRIDLab folder. This protects your files and lets you access them from any computer or operating system in the lab.

See full information about the new computers, available software, login procedures, data storage, etc., on the lab website:

Before using the lab, please check the Known Problems link on the lab website and check the white board in the lab to learn about problems and issues with using the computers. In particular, there is a bug in Illustrator that can freeze the Macs when saving files - see the Known Problems page for details and a workaround.

Login problems? See the lab website FAQ. Send questions to the G.R.I.D. lab managers.
