Dr. Edgar Rangel-German passes away

Dr. Edgar Rangel-German (Ph.D 2002 and MS 1998), a well-known and highly regarded alumnus of Stanford University, died March 23 in Mexico City due to heart failure. He was 42.

A distinguished engineer and energy industry reformer, Dr. Rangel-German served, until his passing, as a Commissioner of the Mexican National Hydrocarbon Commission (CNH) where he was one of the chief architects of the Mexican Energy Reform. He dedicated his intellect and passion to reforming and improving the Mexican energy industry. He was frequently invited to present technical and regulatory aspects of the Reform to international circles and he was interviewed numerous times for the popular media. Elevating the name and reputation of Mexico was a recurring theme of his presentations and his life's work.

In a remarkable achievement, Dr. Rangel-German was inducted into the Mexican Academy of Engineering in 2015. This is the highest national honor for professional achievements and contributions to the science and practice of engineering in Mexico.

Edgar Rangel-German obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the School of Engineering at the Mexican National Autonomous University (UNAM). He graduated with honors and was awarded, notably, with the Gabino Barreda medal for being the only student in the history of the School to obtain a graduating grade point average of 10.0/10.0. Dr. Rangel-German went on to obtain Masters of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Stanford University, specializing in Reservoir Engineering. He also minored in Geological and Environmental Sciences, and went on to post-doctoral research in Petroleum Engineering, also at Stanford University.

He worked as Research Associate at Stanford University. He then moved on to work at Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX). Later, he served as Adviser Coordinator for the Hydrocarbons Sub Secretary at the Mexican Secretary of Energy. Between 2007 and 2009, he served as General Adjoined Director of the Public Credit and Internal Revenue Secretary's Investments Unit, where he evaluated technical, economic and environmental aspects of PEMEX's investment projects and programs. In 2009, he joined CNH as the youngest Commissioner. Simultaneous with his duties at CNH, he served as a faculty member for the undergraduate and graduate programs of UNAM's School of Engineering.

Amongst his professional memberships, Dr. Rangel-German served as Adviser for the Technical Council for UNAM's School of Engineering and its Alumni Association (SEFI), was a member of the Energy Committee of the Mexican School of Civil Engineers (CICM), Associate for the Mexican Council for International Affairs (COMEXI), member of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), member of the Energy Policy Colloquium, member of the Mexican School of Petroleum Engineers (CIPM), member of UNAM's School of Engineering Alumni Association, and was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

In his academic endeavors, Dr. Rangel served as a member of the Petroleum Engineer Career Committee at UNAM, volunteered as reviewer for peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering (JPSE), Transport in Porous Media (TIPM) and Advances in Water Resources (AWR). Dr. Rangel published over 30 papers in conference proceedings and peer-reviewed journals for the oil, gas, geothermal and water industries. His work has been cited more than 300 times in publications.

While professional and academic contributions entails a matter-of-fact listing of milestones achieved and well-documented accomplishments, Dr. Rangel-German is remembered for the unending kindness and sympathy that he offered to everyone he met as well as his sense of humor. Throughout the world, the many friends and colleagues that were touched by his cheerful and supportive manner, mourn him and profoundly lament losing such a special and remarkable human being at such an early age.

Dr. Rangel-German is survived by his wife Jennifer O'Donoghue (also a Stanford alum), his children Ximena and Liam, his parents, and his siblings.
