Abstract:

The paper presents a 2D numerical investigation of fracture propagation in the vicinity of a wellbore under a thermoelastic load (cooling or heating). The problem is studied by extending the complex variable BEM for fracture propagation [Dobroskok et al., 2004] to thermoelasticity [Linkov, 2003; Ghassemi and Zhang, 2004]. A number of problems of interest to geothermal reservoir engineering are treated and discussed with emphasis on the implications for enhanced geothermal systems.
