Abstract

The present study summarizes the most recent information on the Cerro Prieto geothermal aquifer, with special emphasis on the initial production zone where the wells completed in the Alpha aquifer are located. These wells produce steam for power plant units 1 and 2. Brief comments will also be made on the Beta aquifer, which underlies the Alpha aquifer in the Cerro Prieto I area and which extends to the east to what is known as the Cerro Prieto II and Cerro Prieto III areas. Figure 1 shows the location of the area studied.
The Alpha and Beta aquifers differ in their mineralogy and cementing mineral composition, temperatures, and piezometric levels. For example, in the area of well E-1 we have:
Piezometric Level Temperature
Alpha Aquifer
Wells M-8, 325 m 300 C
M-31, and M-35

Beta Aquifer
Well E-1 230 m 330 C

The difference in piezometric levels indicates that there is no local communication between the two aquifers. This situation has been verified by a well interference test, using well E-1 as a producer in the Beta aquifer and well M-46 as the observation well in the Alpha aquifer. No interference between them was observed.
Next we present information on the geology, geohydrology, and geochemistry of Cerro Prieto.
