Gas Chemistry and Thermometry of the Cerro Prieto Geothermal Field

Abstract

Geothermal gases at Cerro Prieto are derived from high temperature reactions within the reservoir or are introduced with recharge water. Gases collected from geothermal wells should, therefore, reflect reservoir conditions. Interpretation of gas compositions of wells indicates reservoir temperatures, controls of oxygen and sulfur fugacities, and recharge source and direction.

Los gases geotermicos en Cerro Prieto derivan de reacciones de alta temperatura dentro del yacimiento o se introducen con el agua de recarga. Por consiguiente, los gases obtenidos de pozos geotermicos deberian reflejar las condiciones del yacimiento. La interpretacion de las composiciones de los gases de los pozos indica temperaturas del yacimiento, controles de las fugacidades de oxigeno y azufre, y fuente y direccion de la recarga.
