Present Status and Policy of New and Renewable Energy in Korea

Abstract

New and renewable energy is one of environmentally friendly domestic sources of energy and an important solution to high oil price. Korea plans to replace 5% of its total energy consumption with new and renewable energy sources by 2011.

The government is investing a total of 70 billion won by 2004 in the three areas of solar energy, wind power and fuel cell in order to maximize the technology development based on selection and focus. The government is making efforts in the development and expansion of the use of new and renewable energy sources by implementing new policies for the use of renewable energy by public organizations, establishment and operation of Green Village and research centers for performance analysis and certification, introduction of certification regulations for renewable energy systems and giving financial support for the cost of generating renewable energy.
