Current State of Geothermal Development in Indonesia

Abstract

After getting stuck on the figure of 807 MW for almost four years, the development of geothermal energy for power generation was endeavored to be intensified again by the government. Various policies have been issued. One of the newest was the Geothermal Development Road-map. The other policies were the National Energy Policy 2003 – 2010, supported by Law No. 20 of 2003 on Electricity and Law No. 27 of 2003 on Geothermal. In the road-map the development of geothermal is targeted for power plant with capacity from 807 MW to 2000 MW in 2008 and will rise to 6000 MW in 2020. Today, eight geothermal areas are being developed to produce 822.5 MW and as scheduled the eight power plants will be operated in the next three years. These areas including Lahendong + 40 MW; Kamojang + 60 MW; Wayang Windu + 110 MW; Darajat + 110 MW; Ulu Belu 110 MW; Lumut Balai 330 MW; Tompaso 60 MW and Mataloko 2.5 MW. We expect the total installed capacity of geothermal power plant will become of 1629.5 MW by 2007.
