Abstract
The area around Mytilene town (Lesvos Island) shows a significant geothermal anomaly. The basement of the study area consists mainly of Permo-Triassic carbonate formations and is thrusted by an ophiolitic nappe. Neogene lavas and Neogene-Quaternary sediments also occur. Three main neotectonic events took place. The more recent one reactivated normal and strike-slip faults trending E-W. The thermal anomaly probably is due to these tectonic structures. An elongation of the shape of the isotemperature curves follow the main fault trends. Waters occurring in the area are mainly of and Na-CI type. Their mineralization is attributed to water- rock interaction, to dissolution of carbonate rocks and to the contribution of the sea water. Deep water has not been traced. reservoir of the geothermal fluids is located 500 m approximately below the surface within the carbonates and its temperature does not exceed 70
