Abstract
Ngawha geothermal field is located' within an in l i e r of Cretaceous Eocene claystone and surrounded by the Quaternary basalt field in Northland. seem reasonable to assume that the heat source for Ngawha is located bodies of basalt magma which have been trapped within the crust and are slowly freezing there. It would The object of ' this paper to show that a basalt heat source for Ngawha. is unlikely and t h at a cooling rhyolite body is a likely heat source.
