Abstract:

To achieve the national geothermal target in 2030, Indonesia needs competent and sufficient human resources to manage various exploration projects over the next 8 years. Exploration is considered by many as the stage that has the highest risk and difficulty level in a geothermal energy development project. Various technical and non-technical challenges in geothermal exploration drilling projects in Indonesia have been widely publicized. However, to date, no facilities or media have been found that capture all these knowledges and best practices into a database. Consequently, it makes difficulties in creating such an education or competency assessment program for personnel who wish to be involved in a geothermal exploration project in Indonesia. In this initial study, a survey of 140 respondents showed that more than 65% agreed that geothermal drilling challenges were different from oil and gas. Furthermore, 80% of respondents agree that it is important for non-geothermal drilling personnel to obtain certification before engaging in geothermal drilling projects. In this paper, the authors also offer an initial concept of a Geothermal Drilling Center of Excellence (GDCOE) that is applicable for Indonesia. The method used in this study is literature review, questionnaire, and interviews with various geothermal experts in Indonesia. Finally, authors expect to receive feedback that can be implemented in developing the proof-of-concept of GDCOE.
