A Study of Well Siting at Broadlands Geothermal Field

Abstract

An analysis of wells drilled at Broadlands Geothermal Field in the years 1965-1982 was used to predict the probability of finding a particular borehole to be a steam producer. a well drilled within of a producing well had a high probability of being a producer, that this probability was not significantly related to direction of the new well from the earlier well. For larger distances from producing wells, the highest probability w a s in a direction. It w a s found that The Broadlands drilling sequence was also analyzed, to see to what extent each new well was used to explore a new area. The actual drilling sequence was with various simulations of a grid drilling sequence, based on actual drillholes with no hole closer than from any other These simulated resulting in a pattern of from 9 to 1 2 wells, clearly gave more information about the field as a whole than the first 1 2 wells actually drilled. This could well be relevant to the exploration policy at Ngawha and Mokai.
