Abstract

A geothermal water in the aging tank Hachobaru geothermal power station passes through the tank for about 1 h. The haviour of silicic acid and aluminium in the flowing water was studied. From the measurements of the thickness of silica scales deposited on the walls of the aging tank, the amount of scales deposited on the titanium plates immersed into the geothermal water and the adsorption behaviour of silicic acid on silica gels, it is concluded that the concentration of monosilicic acid is a major factor controlling the rate of silica deposition and the polysilicic acid is independent of the deposition of silica scales. It was suggested that ferron-reactive aluminium may play a role in the deposition of silica scales.
