Indonesia's Geothermal Energy: Current Conditions and Challenges Development

Abstract

Indonesia has abundant geothermal potential is mostly spread along the volcanic line starting from the island of Sumatra, Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, North Sulawesi and North Maluku. In addition to the volcanic line, Indonesia also has a type of non-volcanic geothermal scattered in Bangka-Belitung, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua. Current conditions, the utilization of geothermal energy for electricity remains very low, amounting to 1493.5 MW or still less than 5% of the total potential of geothermal resources in Indonesia. The low installed capacity generated from geothermal power plants is because of many obstacles faced in its development. The government seriously and constantly strive to accelerate the development of geothermal Indonesia to create programs that accelerate the development of national power through the National Energy Policy in order to find appropriate solutions to the problems encountered.
