Abstract

Since improving the efficiency of shallow 2 meter temperature measurements for geothermal exploration (Coolbaugh et al., 2007; Sladek et al., 2007; Sladek et al. 2009) the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy (GBCGE) and associates have amassed over 2000 temperature measurements from Nevada and California. Data from these measurements have been compiled to create an interactive on-line map (scheduled to be released in late 2013 or early 2014), providing a valuable resource for researchers and the geothermal industry. The data can be queried for location, measured temperatures and date measured. Data have been normalized to a 20°C background temperature to allow for comparison of temperatures from different areas, with actual measured temperatures available in the attribute data. The normalization methods also provide an optional method for making seasonal corrections to survey data, which in some circumstances may reduce errors caused by differences in thermal diffusivity. Graphical methods used in normalizing the data can be used to help estimate anomaly to background thresholds and assess whether corrections for surface solar radiation effects may be needed.
