Abstract
Geothermal energy exploitation for electric power production is possible by utilizing two main systems: the steam turbines and the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) binary power plants. Whilst steam turbines with an axial configuration have traditionally been the technology of choice, the organic turbine possesses the flexibility to function utilizing axial, radial inflow or screw expanders. An innovative turbine configuration for geothermal applications was developed by the Italian turbines manufacturer EXERGY. The technology, known as the organic radial outflow turbine was designed, engineered, manufactured and tested in Italy, and has been operating since early 2013. Since the first installation, many developments have been carried out applying the technology to multiple resources and different boundary conditions. This paper will present the main features that differentiate the radial outflow turbine in binary geothermal applications.
