Geothermal Development in Mongolia: Country Update

Abstract

This paper describes an update of geothermal development in Mongolia in last decade. Previous update, which presented on the World Geothermal Congress 2005, stated general characteristics and geothermal resource potentials of existing 43 hot spring fields. So far several hot springs at Tsenkher, Ikh Shargarljuut, Khujirt, Shivert, Zaart, Tsagaan tal, Ulaankhaalga, Eruu and Chuluut, are more developed as most popular tourist sites for domestic and foreign tourists. Due to the high air pollution in capital city Ulaanbaatar, several activities implemented for ground source heat pump projects both public and private buildings. A first groundwater heat pump system based on utilization of shallow ground water (Single Well System) built in Ulaanbaatar. It provides building with heating and cooling, as well as with domestic hot water. Also the ground source heat pumps have been installed at the kindergarten, school and hospital buildings.
