Abstract

CO2 emission and fresh water for power generation are going to be the main issues in future for Saudi Arabia. By the year 2020 CO2 emission from fuel combustion will exceed 750 billion Gg and fresh water requirement for generating primary energy will exceed 88 billion cubic meters. This amount excludes the drinking water requirement of 275 L/day perperson which will grow exponentially with increase in population. The magnitude of the above issues together with declining oil reserves by 2020 will be cause of concern. Energy source mix and energy policy and development strategy should be the national agenda in the coming years for the country. The country's geothermal energy resources, both wet nnd EGS sources, are lying untapped and the country needs to plan its development now to mitigate the above problems in the next decade. By the time the oil reserves shown declining trend, EGS technology will mature and will provide affordable electricity to millions..
