Abstract
In late 1993 three areas in the northern section of the Te geothermal field began to heat up; this was recognised by dead and dying vegetation. Three ground temperature conducted there and showed that of these areas heated up between late January and midFebruary but had started to cool by late March. The rapid changes indicatethatheating of the soil was caused by steam fluxeswhich might have been triggered by an increase in permeability in the deeper reservoircausedby a local earthquake in November 1993 a decrease in condensation as a result of a local decrease in rain water infiltration during an exceptionally summer.
