Abstract:

It may seem that geothermal energy is renewable and sustainable no matter what: this however is not the case. A close look at geothermal energy shows that unlike solar and wind whose renewability and sustainability is almost effortless, geothermal energy utilisation takes some effort to be classified as renewable and sustainable. As such it is important that from the onset of developing any geothermal resource a proper approach be set on utilisation of the resource to ensure its renewability and sustainable use. This paper discusses the issues that aid sustainable and renewable development of geothermal resources with case study of some practises at Olkaria geothermal project.
