Abstract:

In the province of Guanacaste, specifically in La Fortuna canton, there are superficial manifestations of steam and gases with temperatures reaching up to 95 °C, coming from the geothermal reservoir located at a depth of 2.5 kilometers inside the Guayabo caldera: these manifestations happen thanks to a fracture system serving as contact between the reservoir and the surface. It is expected to use this mix of fluids with a horizontal heating coil based in those used in geothermal building acclimatization systems with heat pumps. This coil is made with stainless steel due to the medium conditions. This mix will be used to heat an organic fluid well above 80°C, to be used in an ORC 250 kWe power plant. In order to make it work properly, it is necessary to analyze several factors and prevent the arising of medium- and long-term problems. Some of these factors are: corrosion due to the low pH ( less than 3.0) related to the high concentration of HCO3-, and mitigation measures to prevent scaling of low-temperature minerals as Wupatkiite, Magnesiocopiapite and Alunogen.
