Risks and Opportunities of a Geothermal Exploration Project in the Pannonian Basin in Central-Eastern Europe

Abstract

The geothermal potential is fairly high in the Pannonian Basin in Central-Eastern Europe. However, this sedimentary basin can’t be competitive with volcanic areas. We need costly deep wells (2000 – 4000 meters) in order to explore 100oC – 150oC temperature. Reservoirs can be modeled in a difficult way and experts with a long experience are need. The water salinity and gas-water ratio is often high. There are extremely high overpressure (360 bars) in the most prospective region. Regulation system related to the geothermal energy is undeveloped, there are a lot to do in order to make it stimulating for investors and consumers. Both technical and regulatory risks exist in this region. However, complex technical concepts were formed in order to face these challenges. Utilizing abandoned hydrocarbon wells, establishing international company for thermal water exploration and production, the unusual depth, the fairly high temperature, the focus both on the establishment of power plants and direct heat facilities provide opportunities for the development of the Hungarian geothermal exploration. The presentation summarizes the main risks and the opportunities that were determined during the latest year.
