Environmental Noise Issues Associated with Geothermal Development

Abstract

Noise from developments can be a environmental issue. This paper outlines the relevant regulatory framework in New Zealand, including the need to adopt the ìbest practical optionî to ensure noise emissions do not exceed a reasonable level. The basic metrics of noise measurement are descriied, together with a description of typical noise sources present at geothermal energy sites. A description is given of a design of a method of reducing noise vertical discharge using a lip shroud.A discussion is provided of aspects of noise generation and acoustic properties of, geothermal steam pipes. A description is also provided of the acoustic design precautions required for the design of large scale steam vent silencers. The closing section deals with a of steps to be taken in the and implementation of geothermal energy projects to ensure the emission of noise does not exceed reasonable levels.
