Abstract
Five regions of deep sedimentary rock and hot temperatures (>130oC) exist within the State of Texas, and have the potential for developing electrical power. These include the Gulf Coast, East Texas area, the Delaware-Val Verde Basins, the Anadarko Basin in the Texas Panhandle, and the Trans-Pecos region. The Gulf Coast has hosted a successful geothermal power plant, proving that existing technology can generate electricity within an oil and gas-producing province. Estimates of electrical generation within the Gulf Coast and Delaware-Val Verde Basins alone are at least 6,900 MW based on past and ongoing investigations. Finally, the resource value may easily reach into the tens of billions of dollars, an amount that can begin to rival the existing Texas oil and gas industry.
