Abstract
Exploration of the Wairakei geothermal field began prior to 1950. An overview is provided of the drilling undertaken fiom the initial investigations to the celebration of 40 years of power generation. Changes in drilling methods and equipment are discussed and a summary of the events leading to the classicwell failures WK26 and WK204 is provided.
