Abstract
Petrographic studies of cuttings from shallow (159 m depth) well Ixtlán 2, drilled in the Ixtlán de los Hervores geothermal zone, State of Michoacán, Mexico, provide new information about the subsurface lithology and hydrothermal regime of that zone. The hydrothermal mineral assemblage encountered in the well is typical of the zeolitic facies, and could indicate a geothermal system of low to high temperature (125-225° C) at depth. This conclusion is apparently corroborated by the geochemical and geothermometric features of thermal springs and wells in the area. Continued exploration of the zone is recommended.
