Abstract
The primary and secondary reservoir fluids in the Zunil geothermal system have distinctly different geographic sources of recharge. The reservoir fluid appears to be derived from a several kilometer wide band that parallels the Pacific coastline in the vicinity of Zunil. At is closet point, this recharge band is located six kilometers from the geothermal system near the town of Quetzaltenango. The recharge may travel to the geothermal system through the western edge of the Zunil Fault Zone. The secondary reservoir, which ranges from sodium bicarbonate to acid sulfate in character, represents locally derived groundwater mixed with steam.
