Use of Lake County Treated Municipal Wastewater for Geothermal Resource Replenishment

Abstract
Feasibility of deep injection for municipal wastewater disposal was analyzed. Pertinent federal, state and local rules and regulations were determined and agencies contacted. Deep well injection technology was reviewed. Several scenarios for deep injection of Lake County treated wastewater were developed and analyzed, including drilling of new injection well or use of an existing geothermal production or injection well, in the area of the Southeast Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility (SERWTF) and at the Geysers. Option 1, a new injection well on site at the SERWTF, was found to have a low probability of success due to lack of a receptive reservoir rock. Option 2, disposal of an existing well, showed possibilities for use of the Borax 7-1 well. Disposal to the Geysers was found to be viable and desirable option. Coordination with the Los Alamos Hot Dry Rock project was also a possibility.
