Abstract
The State of California's Division of Oil and Gas (Division) has been regulating the State's geothermal development for more than 20 years. Because the types of geothermal resources within California vary widely, it has been necessary to develop a thorough plant to ensure the proper development and management of the geothermal resources, as well as protect the State's fresh water. One of the Division's main concerns is the injection of spent geothermal fluids and the confinement of the fluid in the intended zone. The Division's underground injection program has had good success and may serve as a model program for other states.
