Abstract
As part of proposed legislation to create a National Monument at Newberry Volcano, Oregon, the Bureau of Land Management was requested to develop a geothermal lease compensation system that allows areas of different size and location on the volcano to compared for their geothermal resources potential. This system would then be used to effect geothermal lease exchanges in the proposed legislation. The developed system is based on the amount of heat contained in a given volume of rock. The heat content was calculated from projections of temperature gradients from ten exploratory drill holes. This heat content was then used to developed geothermal resource potential equivalency for the and involved in the lease exchange.
