Abstract
Spurr Volcano I as composite Quaternary andesitic cone about 80 miles west of Anchorage and about 40 miles from the rail belt electrical network. This paper presents the result of exploration for geothermal energy resource utilizing self potential, controlled source audiomagnetotellurics, helium and mercury soil sampling, VLF and radar ice depth surveys an geological mapping, petrological analysis, 40K-40Ar geochronology an gas and water geothermometry. Juxtaposition of geophysical and geochemical anomalies suggests the presence of a geothermal resource of unknown temperature within 2000 ft depth on the south flank of Crater Peak. However, petrologic and geochemical evidence from Recent lavas is not consistent with a shallow silicic magma chamber as the source of heat.
