Strategies Relating to the Exploration and Development of a Geothermal Field: A Case for Bacon-Manito Geothermal Project, Albay/Sorsogon Provinces, Luzon, Philippines

Abstract

Bacon Manito geothermal project is an ongoing development activity of PNOC Energy Development Corporation located with a northwest trending belt of volcanoes in the Bicol provinces of southern Luzon. Mayon and Bulusan volcanoes, both active in recent times, are found in this chain. Full geothermal exploration in the area started in September 1877. From May to August 1979, two medium depth exploration holes were drilled in prospective area within a broad low resistivity anomaly. Temperatures between the wells were evaluated, along with the results from further shallow resistivity surveys and the initial geological/geochemical model of the prospect. This evaluation became the basis for drilling the first deep exploratory well farther west of the first two wells. This third hole was a successful one. Further drilling has progressed thereon with a commitment to complete an initial 100 MWe power facility by early 1989. This paper will attempt to demonstrate the role of experience and the accumulation of scientific knowledge in the formulation of strategies relating to the exploration and development of the project.
