Abstract
Agua de Pau Volcano, Sao Miguel Island Azores, is an excellent geothermal prospect. The summit of this Quaternary volcano is indented by a 15,000 year old caldera; the volcanic edifice of trachyte occurred as recently as A.D. 1563. Fumaroles and hot sprigs are common on the north flank of the volcano. The combines results of a variety of geosciences studies carried out between 1981 and 1984 suggest the presence of a hydrothermal convection system of at least 300°C that flows upward beneath the summit and upper flanks of the volcano and spreads laterally to the north northwest and perhaps also to the south southeast. A resource of 140 +/- 70 MWe for 30 years is calculated for the part of the up flow plume beneath thermal manifestations on the north flank. Fault intersections at depth within this area are considered high priority target for exploratory drilling.
